As usual, President Putin has decided to interfere in the judicial process. As reported in the Guardian on 8 October 2012 ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/oct/08/putin-backs-pussy-riot-conviction), the omniscient Russian President claims that the women deserved their prison sentence.
So any chances that the girls from Pussy Riot had that the court would consider the rights and wrongs of the sentence when reviewing the appeal have been destroyed.
Not surprisingly, despite the Kremlin’s control over the TV and most radio stations, Putin’s approval rating is falling. His clear disregard of the judicial process will not help his cause and prove that he doesn’t care about fair trials.
Similarly such behaviour will not impress foreign investors and will further dent any attempts by politicians to claim that the judiciary in Russia is independent.
